PostHeaderIcon Glucosamine

Glucosamine (C6H13NO5) is an amino sugar and a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids. A type of glucosamine forms chitin, which composes the exoskeletons of crustaceans and other arthropods, cell walls in fungi and many higher organisms. Glucosamine is one of the most abundant monosaccharides. It is produced commercially by the hydrolysis of crustacean exoskeletons or, less commonly and more expensive to the consumer, by fermentation of a grain such as corn or wheat. Glucosamine is commonly used as a treatment for osteoarthritis, although its acceptance as a medical therapy varies.

My kitty's arthitis seems much relieved by this product. I ran out, and within a week, he started to limp. We've laid in a good supply and will give it to him without interruption from now on. We sprinkle one capsule on his food morning and night.

Chatte our 10 year old Siamese, needs one of these 2 times a day. The price was the best and I like the new packaging.

My cat, Muffin is overweight and 12 years old and suffers from arthritis. Also, hard to give pills to. Well twice a day, I open the pill and mix the powder in a teaspoon of wet cat food and Muffin LOVES it!!!! Thinks he is getting a treat my other two cats do not get. Special man! It has been two months and Fluffy is running around and playing again. I use to have a small stool to enable him to jump up on the bed. He now just jumps without any aid. This is a miracle pill and I would HIGHLY recommended it to anyone with an arthritic pet. They are also available for dogs. He also goes upstairs, which I have not seen him do for years. Thanks to Cosequin he has some relief from everyday aches and pains.

As my cat was nearing age nine, I noticed that she was no longer grooming herself well, nor was she as active. The vet checked her out, finding no apparent reason (possibly the beginnings of arthritis?), so suggested that we try Cosequin. It's easy to administer: just open the capsule and sprinkle it over her food. It took a few weeks before we saw major improvements, but our cat now is as energetic as she used to be! She is able to easily leap onto counters, beds, an ironing board (not to worry - no iron), and is back to her fastidious grooming! :) I would recommend this product for anyone with an aging animal (the dog formula worked wonders for my older dog as well!). As with any supplement, check with your vet first.

My cat's vet put her on Cosequin about 2 years ago, first 2 capsules a day for 2 weeks, than, 1 a day forever and it has made a world of difference, she's a Manx and her knees pop out alot, so, this keeps her joints lubricated where she will play all day long, I just mix it with her wet food and she never knows it! Plus, it does have a flavor, also! It's a great supplement for Cats.

I have an older Boston Terrier who suffers from arthritis. After taking Phycox for only a short period of time, she began to move better and seemed to have a reduction in pain level. We are very pleased with the results.

have been using this product for several years & found a nice price at this site & great service!

my dog loves the taste! he thinks he is getting a treat. he is still a puppy though, so it remains to be seen how the product will help him.

My 120 lb. chocolate lab is approx. 10 years old and has developed arthritis. He has only been taking this vitamin/mineral supplement for a month and is starting to move much better than before taking them. This order was the second container that I have ordered.

I am a technician at a veterinary clinic and have an older large breed dog with horrible hip displaysia. This product not only is effective for relieving some of her pain (she actually jumps around and plays now), but it also doesn't have the side effects (Gastro-intestinal upset - vomiting, diarrhea) of NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) such as carprofen (Rimadyl, Novox, Vetprofen, etc), firocoxib (Previcox, etc) and meloxicam (Metacam, etc). I think it is a wonderful product. We had a meeting with a representative of the company that makes it at the clinic, and he said you don't need to do the "loading" dose to be effective: you can just start with the maintenance dose. I have been doing that and have seen terrific results. I highly recommend this! :)

I began this treatment with a very skeptical eye. The cosequin was prescribed by my othopedic surgeon for my knees and shoulder problems. It has been now a little over a month since I began it and I am AMAZED that is really has made a difference. It was an expensive supplement but I felt if it worked it was a much cheaper alternative to surgery and i am a believer now and have it on subscription!!

I was told this might help. It's been three weeks. I take them as I'm supposed to. If no change after another four or five weeks I won't buy it again. If it helps and I start skipping around the garden I'll let you know. Wish me freedom from the aches that started for no apparent reason.

The major complaint for this product is that it is pricey. You need to start taking three capsules a day for one or two months and then you can drop down to two a day. Depending on where you get them (Costco has a better deal) they are about 25 to 30 cents each. The reason you want to try this product is that the ingredients are of a very high quality. If glucosamine-chondroitin is going to work for you, and it doesn't work for everyone, then you should try this one first. It it works, then you can try the cheaper ones. The problem with all food supplements is that their quality is not regulated by the FDA, so you never really know what you are getting. Cosamin DS at least has been peer reviewed and has multiple professional recommendations. Try this one first.

I use this product because my doctor told me he takes it. He recommends it over all other brands.

I took most of the bottle and did not notice any difference when taking this product. Would not order again. Since we are different your experience may be different.

I can not take the product. I also have Fibromyalgia and have tried to take Glucosamine in the past. This product caused me to ache all over and caused burning in my stomach. I tried putting it in the freezer before taking it, but still had the same symptoms. I had high hopes so I wouldn't have take a perscription for the IC. I plan on seeing if their is a return provision if I can't tolerate it?

When I was first in serious, unrelenting pain for interstitial cystitis, I learned that the quality of life for those who suffer with it is as poor as can be imagined. I was handed a very long list of foods to avoid, but was told that no good ones could be suggested. That was the message of my primary doctor and gynecologist. Having bladder pain 24/7 drove me out of my mind! And being told that analgesics and products typically good for the bladder would simply worsen the symptoms was a message I found unbearable. Very thankfully, my sister read an article about Cysto Protek, designed to actually improve and restore the bladder wall that had been destroyed, and mailed it to me. A diagram was included. I took it to my doctors and they simply concurred that it couldn't hurt me. As odd as it may seem, within one day of taking the capsules, I experienced great pain relief. Since that day more than a year ago, I have been taking the recommended dosage every day and truly don't want to be without it. All of the irritants - chocolate, sour cream, eggs - you name it - can all be tolerated well, unless I am excessive about any of them. There are still foods I try to avoid, but I experience no bladder pain at all. This product is a miracle for me and sincerely an answer to prayer. I am extremely grateful for it. I can't imagine any doctor who understands its value allowing his patients to be without it. If you are in pain, don't hesitate to try it!

Red capsules (somewhat large), certified potency (FDA) and reviews of how it has helped real IC patients. That's enough for me to continue taking it even when my IC isn't nearly as bad as most. The pain from a flare is maddening and trust me you NEVER know how bad something is until it's happening. Being a 28 year old male the last urologist I saw said he could do nothing and told me to avoid trigger foods, thanks docs. I'll stick to this for now. Does it work? Well... it may, it differs from person to person I suppose, but is it worth the risk not to take it? I'd rather stay on it than risk not taking it and find myself in a worse position in a year.

Cystoprotek is a very good supplement to help people who suffer from chronic interstial cystitis and it has helped my cystitis symptom very much.

Cystoprotek was recommended by my urologist for Interstitial Cystitis. It has helped a great deal plus its side effects seem to be greatly increased energy. I researched all the ingredients and they are all natural and good for the body. I have even recommended it to my family and friends who don't have IC!!! Gretchen

My father, mother, and mother in law are having problems with their knees. They have been using Glucosamine HCl Chondroitin Sulfate for at least three years now and their knees flexibility improved significantly. My father is 65 years old now and he is the most beneficial of this product, he can bend, walk, and move around without any problem. My Mother can now walk and move around great but still have difficulties bending her knee but overall she is very satisfied with the product. My mother in law just started using it for the last 6 months and she is feeling better but still she is getting some difficulties moving around. In general this supplement is truly support your knees and will improve your health. I do recommend this product to anyone who has any complications with the knees. CUATION: If you are allergic to shellfish, DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT.

I was a runner for over 25 years. I raced a lot including 11 marathons. I'd estimate that I've put in enough running miles to have run around the world at the equator, if that was physically possible. In any case, I've had very few problems with running injuries. Perhaps the one big exception is recurring sore ankles in my later years. At one point, they were sore enough that I not only had to stop running, I was having trouble walking. At that point I started using a product called "Joint Juice," and I experienced a bit of relief. I didn't go back to running, however. I was discussing the situation with a friend and he said that "Joint Juice" contained only glucosamine and that I needed a product containing both glucosamine and chondroitin. My friend is very knowledgeable about endurance sports and associated overuse injuries, I should add. So, I picked up a large bottle of Kirkland Signature Extra Strength Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablets. I chose the Kirkland product because it was highly rated and available at a reasonable price. I'd say my ankles are now much better. Much better! They're so much better, in fact, that I'm now considering going into training for 5K and, eventually, 10K runs. Perhaps I might add that I'm 73 years old and I'd love to get back to racing. Gary Peterson

I know it should take months before one sees results, but within half an hour, my pain level was down far enough that I could walk without a cane and without a limp. I've been taking it over three months now and I am nearly pain free. Drastically reduce the amount of pain medication I take. Splitting the pills in half makes them easier to swallow.

First, I understand that this is just one report; you need to have a real well-designed double-blind test to have any sort of proof, but...I have had a lot of problem with my lower back because of deteriorating joints. My doctor suggest that I try out this compound. Kirkland was rated tops for getting the right amount of active ingredient etc in Consumer Reports, so I tried a bottle. After several months, my back is noticably better. Could be a coincidence, but I don't think so. As to the product itself, as someone else commented, the pills are pretty big. Remember that you need to take 2 per day to get the recommended dose. Oddly, they smell a bit like chocolate. Not bad!

Don't know if it works on joints yet - only been taking it a few weeks. But order process and delivery through amazon was excellent.

The Arthritis Handbook: Improve Your Health and Manage the Pain of Osteoarthritis (A DiaMedica Guide to Optimum Wellness) The Arthritis Handbook: Improve Your Health and Manage the Pain of Osteoarthritis (A DiaMedica Guide to Optimum Wellness)

Reviews

Dr. Grant Cooper is an excellent writer and a masterful teacher. His book is better at making arthritis understandable than, for example, Arthritis for Dummies. Furthermore, it is shorter and more readable than the "Dummies" title. Dr. Cooper spells out all the key concepts in the first chapters; he goes into detail later. The sections on nutrition, dietary supplements and exercise are particularly strong. Pages 95-107 are devoted to specific exercises, with photos. I wish Dr. Cooper had included some aquatic exercises in this section but I think I understand why he didn't. He stresses that the best exercises are the ones people will actually do. Exercises that can be done at home are certainly the most convenient. Still, I think the next edition of The Arthritis Handbook should be expanded to include specific aquatic exercises, illustrated by line drawings. I recommend The Arthritis Handbook as an excellent "first book" for arthritic patients. You'll learn, for example, why your joints are so stiff upon getting out of bed in the morning, why a good diet and regular exercise are so important and what causes the pain and inflammation in arthritic joints.

Reviewed by William Phenn for Reader Views (5/08) A medical doctor that has devoted his life to the study of arthritis, Dr. Cooper became interested in this disease as a child. Seeing his own grandmother suffer the pain and debilitating effects of this crippler was his inspiration. Working at New York's "Beth Israel Medical Center" in the Orthopedics Department, Dr. Grant Cooper specializes in the care of people with spine, sports and musculoskeletal problems. "The Arthritis Handbook" is a five-part, 224-page book that will change the lives of arthritis sufferers everywhere. Dr. Cooper has broken it down to a combination of three vital elements. These three elements are diet, exercise and carefully selected supplements to a healthy diet. Dr. Cooper shows you how you can do much more to ease your pain than just taking pills. He does not advocate discontinuance of such drugs as are prescribed; he just gives the reader alternatives. In Part I, he defines: Osteoarthritis and how it develops in the human body. The role obesity plays in damaging the cushioning properties of cartilage. How the additional weight puts undue pressure on these joints, causing damage to the cushion. Part II deals with nutrition and the benefits of eating a healthy diet. Grant stresses such things as more fruits and vegetables, less red meat and more fish. The depth and concise detail that these topics covered kept me very interested. I enjoyed the way he explained the diet and what each part played toward a healthy body. Part III explained the importance of exercise and the types of exercise one should do to help ease the pain of this disease. He covers this portion of the book with many photographs and an in-depth discussion. So in-depth is his coverage of this important area that he dedicates about a third of the book to it. Stretching, Strength Training, Aerobics, specific knee and hip exercises and lifestyle changes are just some of the topics covered. Part IV describes what Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate are and what part they play in the health of the human body. Part V is the one we all fear, "Medical and Surgical Options." Dr. Cooper gives an insight into medications, injections and surgery. Explaining the benefits and drawbacks of these procedures, he lets the reader know what can be expected. I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing book and recommend it highly to anyone that has this disease and wants to know more, or has a loved one that has this crippling debilitator. "The Arthritis Handbook" is very well written and presented, in-depth examples and explanations, good pictures and quality printing earned this book my highest A+ rating. Buy it, read it and live well by following Dr. Cooper's recommendations.

Dr. Cooper has provided an extensive comprehensive review that all people may benefit from. Very clearly written easy to understand and easy to refer back to again and again. Would definitely recommend to all people of all ages. The average layperson all the way up to a medical professional may find this book extremely useful.

In the Arthritis Handbook Dr. Cooper presents a take charge approach for individuals suffering with osteoarthritis. His plan focuses on managing the symptoms of osteoarthritis using nutrition, exercise, and dietary supplements, while recommending surgery and medication only when other approaches have failed. I am most impressed that Dr. Cooper recommends complimentary approaches to managing arthritis such as the practice of Tai Chi, which is also endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation. The book is not a typical arthritis help book - it is peppered with personal and cultural references that are as informative as they are amusing. The book also includes a glossary to help readers understand medical terminology and a list of websites for readers to learn more about osteoarthritis. Overall, the best aspect of the book is that it encourages patients to communicate with healthcare professionals, and notes key times when patients should seek professional advice. Despite the fact that the information in the book is sound, the book is somewhat disorganized and at times seems to be addressing two separate audiences. Also, I would have liked to have seen a detailed reference list of the studies described in the book. Ultimately these stylistic shortfalls do not detract from the promising message of the book - osteoarthritis can be managed by lifestyle changes that are described in the book.

The Arthritis Handbook is an easy read and very informative. If you have osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis), you need to read this book. It explains what osteoarthritis is, and how you can take simple steps to treat it. The nutrition and exercise sections are excellent. The pictures make following the exercises very easy. Other treatments, like supplements, medications, injections, and even surgery are discussed in language that I could easily follow. I enjoyed reading this book and think you will, too. I wish I had found this book years ago! But, better late than never.

This well written and authorative book has given me hope in my battle with arthritis. I'm following the recomendations and using the products mentioned in the book and am seeing positive results. Although my hips are probably to far gone to benefit from the program (per discussion in the book), I'm hopeful that I'll be able to protect the rest of my body from arthritis. The section on the effects of prescription drugs alone makes this book worth reading. How many of you are aware that it is believed that Celebrex, an effective pain reliever, contributes to joint deterioration? And, did you know that 16,000 people in this country alone die yearly from using NSAIDS? The author reviews many commonly used drugs for arthritis relief and tells what works and what may be dangerous to you. Stan Adamson 52 - osteoarthritis patient and double hip replacement candidate.

In the past ten months, I've burned through over $100k in insurance benefits, pursuing what conventional medicine offers for osteoarthritis. In that time, the disease has rapidly and progressively degenerated joints in my neck, shoulders and hips to a point that I am almost completely bed-ridden. Conventional medicine has not only done nothing whatsoever to aleviate the disease or the pain, it has addicted me to morphine and Duragesic (80 times more potent than street-level heroin). I turned to this book out of desparation. The book states clearly and early on, that conventional medicine doesn't know what to do for osteoarthritis OTHER THAN to mask the pain with narcotics. The position of conventional medicine - i.e. most A.M.A. practitioners - is that osteoarthritis is a normal part of aging and once it occurs, there is nothing that can be done for it. This book contends that is absolutely wrong. The book puts forward a very compelling argument that by following a nine point systematic approach, the heart of which is a regimen of daily glucosamine and chondroitin together with ASU, osteoarthritis can not only be stopped in its progression, but the symptoms actually reversed. The book is wonderfully and powerfully written and I think maybe, the best hope and option for osteoarthritis sufferers. How am I doing since going onto the 9-part program espoused by the book? Well, I've only been on the glucosamine and chondroitin for about three weeks. I haven't been able, as yet, to locate a source for ASU, and I haven't yet implemented any of the the other 8 parts of the cure - though I will be doing so within the next few days. Have my osteoarthritic sypmtom abated since I started the program espoused by this book? Sad to say, no. However, I am truly convinced that as I factor in the other 8 parts of the cure and give it another month, my pain will decrease, I will regain range of motion, and I will regain function again. I believe this is an excellent book and very much worth a read by every sufferer of osteoarthritis.

The title is unwisely chosen, close to a cheap shot, designed to get the attention of people in pain. This is unfair, and diminishes the total effect of the book, which is well researched and documented for a book for a lay audience. It is very helpful to have all the information on glucosamine and condroitin together, with an exact plan. Very useful is the attention paid to the lack of quality control in choosing nutritional supplements. Dr. Theo provides excellent advice on how to choose wisely, and how to avoid poor or deceptive formulations.

Three months ago I was as skeptical as John (below). I have OA in both knees and was contemplating knee replacement surgery. I decided to give this guy's recommendations a chance as a last resort, since my meds weren't helping much. I've been on fairly large doses of glucosamine/chondroitin, ASU, SAMe, and Omega 3-6-9 since around last Thanksgiving. My knee pain has reduced by, I would guess, about 75%. I don't want to over-hype this regimen, and I don't have any idea how long the relief will last. But it's real, and it's substantial. Note that you have to allow a couple of months for it to fully kick in. [...] The above review was originally written on 2/14/07. As of 6/7/07, I've added the supplement MSM, and the "cocktail" continues to work. I'm still off pain meds except for the occasional ibuprofen. The supplements aren't magic, my knees continue to hurt, but I'm still much closer to pain-free than before I began the regimen. And most importantly, I'm still avoiding the surgeon's knife. ~CPW

Put it this way, I have joint pain, and I take glucosamine and chondroitin for the pain. But I have my doubts about them, too, especially with regard to the claim that they "rebuild cartilage" (note: I am not a doctor, and I am just a layperson and reader of average knowledge, who has done some reading on this). Here is what the Mayo Clinic site states about glucosamine and chondroitin (Mayo has one of the top-5 arthritis departments in the country): "Many manufacturers market dietary supplements that they claim can rebuild cartilage. But little scientific evidence supports this claim. The most studied of these supplements is glucosamine sulfate. Glucosamine is a natural compound in your body that helps make your cartilage strong and rigid. Osteoarthritis causes the breakdown of joint cartilage and can affect any joint, including the elbow, ankle, wrist and knee. Although there is insufficient evidence that glucosamine rebuilds cartilage, there is some evidence that a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may relieve moderate to severe pain in some people with osteoarthritis of the knee. The mechanism by which it does this isn't clear." Some doctors state that glucosamine mimics aspirin and Tylenol, i.e. it is a pain reliever, not a rebuilder of joints. The book is still good in that it shows the current scientific ideas on how to heal and feel better; but let's not let our hopes of a "holistic cure" get in the way of evidence.

Since its original publication in 1996, The Arthritis Cure has swept the nation, providing amazing relief for the millions who suffer chronic arthritis pain. I received my "used - good" order - "Maximizing the Arthritis Cure" today. I would NOT say it is in "good" condition. Bottom right corner looks like a dog chewed it up, pages are highlighted, and there is personal information handwritten on the back page, that probably someone doesn't want there. Definitely not worth the money!! If it had listed as "used - fair", I would not have been surprised at the condition, except for the personal injfo on the back page.

My elderly aunt has been plagued with arthritis for years and hasn'talways been willing to try alternative treatments. As her painprogressed we convinced her to try the glucosamine and condroitanblends. She is seeing substantial improvements! Our daughter is takingit as a way to heal her back injuries due to an accident. She nolonger needs those heavy duty pain killers. Buy both of Theodosakis'books and see for yourself....Treat arthritis naturally and see howmuch better you feel without those pain killers that make your mindfuzzy.

This is the requisite "book biz" follow-up to their earlier book, The Arthritis Cure: The Medical Miracle that Can Heal, Reverse, and May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (1997), which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one. My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle. Written by three different laureled academics and obviously put together by committee, the earlier book was a big time best seller and occasioned this sequel. Most of the diet advice was like something I had read twenty years ago. The exercise program ditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference. In fact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use of these supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis. People bought the book in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also bought the book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine and chondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplements without the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or is it just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? I was a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, and we all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of a scoundrel." So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairly close to their overall program. Two years have passed and although I cannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved. In the follow-up book, the authors give information on other treatments.I have to say that I think they've done a positive service in writing these two books. The information about healing in general and about prevention and about the positive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile. The authors may have made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they ripped anybody off, on the contrary. I am happy to be positive even though I still think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program can do, although I only have my own experience to go on. Their reports of the double blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way from convincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cure osteoarthritis.

I'm not sure which book I enjoyed more; The Arthritis Cure or it's follow-up, Maximizing the Arthritis Cure. Either way, Dr. Theodosakis has done it again with an inspirational and helpful book. As a nurse, I recommended his latest book to my father who suffers from osteoarthritis in his knees. He has experienced exceptional relief from taking the glucosamine and chondroitin and following the other steps of the plan. He has been able to almost stop taking ibuprofen other than when he has a bad flare up. Now he is able to garden more comfortably and with better biomechanics and he is walking the dog on a regular basis again---the dog is grateful to the good doctor as well! I'm glad that more people in the medical community are coming around to recognize the power of these supplements.

I enjoyed reading your book it was very informatiive with excellent suggestions for well being. I have one problem I hope you can help me with. Because of years of taking medications for R.A. my stomach is very sensitive to many medications such as asprin etc. I find I am unable to take chondroiten & glucosamine without stomach distress. Unfortunatley, these two supplements are a major part of the arthritis cure. I would appreciate any sugges tions.

Biochemistry

Glucosamine was first identified in 1876 by Dr. Georg Ledderhose, but the stereochemistry was not fully defined until 1939 by the work of Walter Haworth. D-Glucosamine is made naturally in the form of glucosamine-6-phosphate, and is the biochemical precursor of all nitrogen-containing sugars. Specifically, glucosamine-6-phosphate is synthesized from fructose-6-phosphate and glutamine as the first step of the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway. The end-product of this pathway is UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc), which is then used for making glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, and glycolipids.

As the formation of glucosamine-6-phosphate is the first step for the synthesis of these products, glucosamine may be important in regulating their production. However, the way that the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway is actually regulated, and whether this could be involved in contributing to human disease, remains unclear
